What are the benefits of a therapy swing?

Maybe you've seen a therapy swing or hammock during your child's physical therapy or occupational therapy and wondered what it's used for. Perhaps your child has even had an experience with it.

There are various types of swings used in therapy, but I want to focus on a particular type – fabric swings, like those from Swüng It®. Don't be alarmed by the frequent use of the word "therapy" – this swing is for all children and adapts to individual needs.

Sensory Processing & Integration

Sensory swings are a beneficial tool for sensory perception and integration. Simply put, they help in initially receiving various stimuli and then processing and connecting them. Some children may experience sensory integration dysfunction, leading to issues such as behavioral abnormalities, concentration problems, motor skill challenges, and more. Various theories exist regarding the potential causes. In some cases, it becomes evident early in infancy, while in others, it may manifest later on.

The Swüng It® sensory swing is crafted from a cozy cotton fleece that gently wraps around the body. It provides a sensation akin to a hug, evoking a feeling of security. This can aid in self-awareness and relaxation. The additional swinging motion helps refine balance and body perception.

Even and linear oscillations promote relaxation and can assist children who may have been overstimulated or stressed. While occupational therapy employs sensory swings for behavioral issues or concentration difficulties, physical therapy can utilize them to enhance balance, coordination, or muscle strength. Of course, the two are interconnected, with the focus varying based on the specific goal

The swing is not only therapeutic but also a ton of fun, perfect for play, spinning, or whatever imaginative activities your creative kids come up with. Depending on what a child needs in a particular moment, the swing is versatile. For example, your child might get an evening energy boost and go all out playing in the swing. Eventually, they'll sit in it, gently rocking, and gradually find peace and calm.

Every child is different

It is important to note that every child is unique, and their reactions to swings, especially therapy swings, vary. There are no set rules, as what works well for one child may not be suitable for another. It's best to approach it gradually and, in case of uncertainty, consult with your doctor, therapist, or healthcare professional.
